Salt Lake County, Orbit Irrigation Products, Former Utah Senators Julander & Carling, and Spy Hop Productions Join Utah Rivers Council to Urge Water Users to Practice Smart Sprinkling
Salt Lake City, UT. June 22, 2006.
The Utah Rivers Council (URC) will launch Smart Sprinkling, a new public education campaign, at a press conference hosted by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon at 10:00 am Friday, June 23 on the Xeriscaped Plaza located between the North and South Buildings of the Salt Lake County Government Center (2100 South State Street). The initiative - designed to educate the public on the wise use of water – will focus on providing practical advice, tools, and Utah-specific information on how to operate sprinkler systems efficiently and effectively.
Efficient sprinkler operation is a critical issue in Utah, the second direst state in the country. Between 60 and 70 percent of water use in the state occurs outdoors, and of that, nearly 50% could be conserved by simply curbing the over-watering of lawns. A 2000 study by the Utah Division of Water Resources revealed that homes equipped with automatic sprinkler systems consumed nearly 50% more water than those in which systems were programmed manually. The Smart Sprinkling campaign is designed to give homeowners tools to overcome wasteful water use that occurs because of improper design, operation and maintenance to sprinkler systems.
Former Utah State Senators Paula Julander and Richard Carling will serve as Honorary Co-Chair of the statewide campaign. Spy Hop Productions produced the educational video that serves as the cornerstone of the campaign. Orbit Irrigation Products provided both underwriting and technical support for the video, which is available for online viewing at the Smart Sprinkling website (www. utahrivers.org/smartsprinkling). Additionally, 5,000 free DVD copies of the video are available upon request from URC for those homeowners unable to view the information online.
The documentary-style video serves three primary educational goals: (1) convincing homeowners that saving water equals saving money; (2) providing practical advice about how to manage automatic sprinkler systems; and (3) creating awareness of the connection between Utah's rivers and the water that comes out of a homeowner"s tap. Easy-to-implement tips include examples of better water management techniques, such as properly adjusting timers so sprinklers no longer run too often or too long and modifying watering schedules to reflect the changing water needs of the seasons.
Designed by Spy Hop, the Smart Sprinkling website will also launch June 23rd providing more detailed how-to information about watering schedules, efficient sprinkler operation, and examples of water waste. Additionally, brochures designed to drive the public to the educational site will be placed in many local lawn & garden and sprinkler supply stores.
